Der Name Sechsämtertropfen ist historischgeographischen Ursprungs:
Im 15. Jahrhundert entstanden „im Land vor dem böhmischen Wald“ sechs Verwaltungsbezirke, für die sich der Name „Sechsämterland“ einbürgerte. Hauptstadt dieser Markgrafenschaft, dem Zentrum des Fichtelgebirges, wurde Wunsiedel. Seit alten Zeiten ist in der urwüchsigen Natur des Fichtelgebirges eine vielfältige Flora daheim. Es war dieser Reichtum der Natur, der den Wunsiedeler Pharmazeuten und Destillateur Gottlieb Vetter Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts inspirierte, einen Kräuterlikör zu entwickeln. Nach jahrelanger Vorarbeit für eine ausgewogene Rezeptur konnte er 1895 seinen Kräuterlikör unter dem Namen Sechsämtertropfen zum Verkauf anbieten. Im Laufe eines Jahrhunderts wurde sein Produkt zu einer national bekannten und beliebten Marke.
Im Jahre 2001 ging Sechsämtertropfen in das Sortiment des Spirituosenhauses Schwarze und Schlichte über, das seit Generationen als Familienunternehmen geführt wird. Noch heute wird Sechsämtertropfen nach der Original-Rezeptur hergestellt. Dabei prägt insbesondere die Vogelbeere den typisch würzig-feinherben Geschmack des Sechsämtertropfen.
